Gray has practiced in Tampa since 1981. Previously, Gray was a partner at Simmons & Dunlap and Foley & Lardner. Although Gray has broad experience in most types of civil litigation, and has tried cases ranging from commercial fraud to insurance bad faith to verdict or judgment, for over twenty years his practice has primarily focused on insurance coverage trials, appeals, and analysis. He has tried coverage cases to judgment in federal, bankruptcy, and state courts and has successfully defended and prosecuted coverage appeals in federal and state courts. He actively represents clients in all three federal district courts in Florida, in state courts around Florida, and has significant federal and state appellate experience. He has appeared in federal courts around the United States, ranging from Indiana (arguing before the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, In re Washington Public Power Supply Securities Litigation), Ohio (insurer counsel in coverage litigation consolidated with In re Cordis Corporation Pacemaker Products Liability Litigation), to Puerto Rico (In re San Juan DuPont Plaza Hotel Fire Litigation). He has represented liability insurers in bankruptcy cases arising out of underlying mass tort disputes, both in connection with litigating disputed coverage issues and negotiating insurer participation in (and the funding of) claims resolution procedures in confirmed reorganization plans. In 2007, he established W. Gray Dunlap, Jr., P.A., which focuses on the representation of casualty and property insurers in complex coverage and extra-contractual disputes. Gray is a frequent lecturer on insurance litigation topics.
